Applesauce EP - March's Album Of The Month

You guys know how much I stan Esme Emerson so of course they were going to be this month's album of the month pick with "Applesauce", dare I say some of their best work yet?

1. Too Far Gone

Now this is starting in style. Too Far Gone is a funky song with a good bass and what seems to be a cool distorted guitar to back it up. Despite its upbeat feel, the song has a deeper meaning, one of anger and resentment. It's about how bottled-up feelings can degrade you and beat you up until you're too far gone. It's chaotic and fun at the same time and I love it. Too Far Gone 9/10.

2. Together

Together, my favourite song on the EP. Something about this track really touches me, I don't know if it's the brilliant vocals, relatable lyrics, or simply impeccable violin skills but it hits differently. The song is all about being down, but being down with someone. Sharing an open honest space with another person, being your most vulnerable self and just being there for each other. No matter how much time passes it feels as though you always end up being back to square one, with your rock and weeping in a melancholy hole with one and another. I think it's the idea of opening up to someone else and just allowing each other to be there for each other whilst also being sad for yourself is what I relate to and love the most. I can definitely think of some particular friends that I feel this with. Together 10/10.

3. Yard

Catchy. The only way I can describe this song. Not catchy in the sense that it's annoying but catchy in the sense that you love it so much you catch yourself singing it while you're daydreaming. Yard is a song of nostalgia, all about their childhood, specifically their back garden. It's a promise to never forget their roots and always return home when they need it or are asked to. It's also the comfort of knowing that no matter how far you go, emotionally or physically, you have a home and a place to belong. Yard 7/10.

4. Stay

What in the jersey beat? A song you'd never expect to have a jersey beat but my god does it work! Stay is probably the saddest song on the EP and is a theme that is explored very commonly, wanting someone to stay. Almost begging for just one extra moment with someone, you have too many unfinished conversations for them to leave now. This could also relate to a theme that Esme Emerson explores a lot, growing up. Growing apart from childhood friends or losing people and memories you didn't want to. Stay 7/10.

Album Launch

This EP was released on March 7th, and the day after on March 8th I was lucky enough to be able to attend an EP launch party. I don't know what Esme and Emerson want to call it officially but I and about 50 other fans were able to see Esme Emerson perform songs off this EP and their other EP, Big Leap, No Faith, Small Chancer. We all also got the opportunity to purchase these 2 EPs in vinyl form and get them signed, which I did. The event was great and was hosted by the amazing people at Rough Trade so shoutout. I honestly loved meeting the duo again and can't wait to do so in the future. I'm so excited to see these songs performed live once again.
