Short n' Sweet - September Album Of The Month

Short n' Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter has been a great success since its release on 23/08/24. With hits like Espresso and Taste this album is popular among many. Its is also important to mention the album before this Emails I Can't Send was extremely influential to Sabrina so there was already big shoes to fill and extremely high expectations when this record was announced so lets see how it's done?

1. Taste

Talk about starting with a bang Taste is a big hit on this record and is frankly a bop. It's an enjoyable listen and has a music video featuring actress Jenna Ortega, all about revenge and betrayal Taste is one of my favourites from this album. Taste 9/10.

2. Please Please Please

Continuing on with the big hits, Please Please Please is extremely popular and there is a reason why, it's a bop! Personally, not one of my favourites but its is very very fun to listen to when it does come on. This song explores the complex feeling of love, such as affection, anxiety and anger. Please Please Please 7.5/10.

3. Good Graces

Good Graces has one of my favourite messages of all songs on the album. The song is all about setting boundaries and as she says "do something sus and you can kiss my cute ass bye-bye". This is a perfect continuation of Please Please Please, which tells the story of a partner pleading their significant other for communication and honesty. Good Graces 7/10.

4. Sharpest Tool

Unrequited love, one sided relationships and partners with no communication, the pain of all these situations are explored heavily in the fourth track on this record. Sabrina talks about how it was confusion that was the biggest feeling that arises from all these red flags in a partner. Sharpest Tool 6/10.

5. Coincidence

Country inspired and rather different from the previous songs on this album, Coincidence feels like the second part of Sharpest Tool. Sabrina makes fun of the fact that it's always just a coincidence that her boyfriend ends up with girls all the time and how he didn't treat the relationship with enough respect. Coincidence 8/10.

6. Bed Chem

Chemistry and partnership, 2 important things in a relationship. Bed Chem talks about Sabrina's new discovered chemistry with a recently met lover, the song is reminiscent to 2000s hits as Sabrina says in an interview "I love Christina Aguilera was one of my very first idols and icons. I was eleven years old and you couldn’t get her name out of my mouth." This could hint to how songs like Bed Chem were inspired by Christina. Bed Chem 8.5/10.

7. Espresso

Never in my life as someone compared themselves to coffee, but it works! Sabrina's partner can't sleep when with her like coffee keeps you awake. Espresso hit number 1 in Ireland, UK and Australia - peaking at number 2 in the US however - this is well deserved success as it's one of my personal faves from the album. Espresso 8.5/10.

8. Dumb & Poetic

A painfully truthful song that many will relate to, Dumb & Poetic speaks about reminiscing on what your partner used to be, although, now all he does is lie and stab you in the back which will ultimately hurt you to a point beyond repair if you don't put a stop to it. Dumb & Poetic 7/10.

9. Slim Pickins

Picking out a man, struggle for some girls, ease for others and the rest wait to get picked. This song goes into Sabrina's journey into finding the right man. She wants someone attractive, intelligent and affectionate but she's not finding any! She considers the idea of ending up alone but the thought scares her so she settles for someone she doesn't love. Slim Pickins 6/10.

10. Juno

A niche reference not many understand, Juno references back to a 2007 movie where the protagonist get's pregnant. This song is all about Sabrina's desire to get pregnant, not because she wants children but because she loves her man so much she feels he is the right person to do it with. This name could also be relating to Roman Goddess, Juno, who is the Goddess of love and marriage. Juno 8.5/10.

11. Lie To Girls

Lie To Girls delves into the idea of what girls do to date men. They lie, cry, go through pain and in some instances go insane for the man of their dreams. Sabrina shows off her anger for what she's done and others will do just to prop up an already destined to fail relationship. Lie To Girls 7/10

12. Don't Smile

Twisting a classic saying "Don't cry because it's over, smile cause it happened." and making it "Don't smile cause it happened, cry because it's over." this song is spiteful and full of anger, Sabrina doesn't want her ex to have good memories of their past relationship. Don't Smile 6.5/10.

Final Thoughts

A summer 2024 album I do really like this album. I don't think it hits the peaks of Emails I Can't Send however I think it is very consistent and isn't that far off the greatness of her last album, but that's just my opinion, I've seen people rank it above. This song rivalled Brat by Charli XCX and The Rise And Fall Of A MidWest Princess by Chappell Roan for song of the summer for me, and I genuinely can't decide on which. Short n Sweet 8/10.
